Celebrating National Hydration Day 2022

On every June the 23rd, National Hydration Day is celebrated to recognise the importance of staying hydrated. Naturally, the upcoming summer months make us want to spend more time outside and bask in the sunshine. However, too much time spent in the hot weather can increase our risk of dehydration. This is because more exposure to high temperatures increases our sweat rates, which contributes to water and salt content loss. Failing to replace that water can lead to dehydration and a number of unpleasant symptoms.

The Nation's Favourite Hydration Drink

Pouring ourselves a glass of water isn’t always the answer to hydration, nor is it the most effective way to hydrate. Instead, pick up a bottle from the iPRO Hydrate range which is enriched with a daily dose of vitamins and added electrolytes such as magnesium, sodium, and potassium. Sodium particularly plays a role in hydration as it helps to retain fluids rather than eliminate them through the body. With temperatures in the UK rising, there has never been a greater need to stay hydrated.

Recognising the First Signs of Dehydration

Believe it or not, thirst is not always the first sign that our bodies are dehydrated. Before feeling thirsty, we could already be dehydrated and lose as much as 1 to 2 percent of our body water content. One of the first symptoms of dehydration can be headache, fatigue, exhaustion, dizziness, or overall low energy. These symptoms cause repercussions if left ignored, so recognising the less serious signs beyond thirst can easily prevent severe dehydration.

Getting Your 5-a-Day to Stay Hydrated

Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables such as watermelon, apples, strawberries, and cucumber is an effective way to keep your hydration levels up. These antioxidant-rich foods also gives our immune system a helpful boost that a glass of plain water alone can’t provide. Since a fifth of our daily fluid intake comes from food, incorporating a variety of fruit and vegetables into our diet provides us with a healthy balance of nutrients for optimal vitality.

Importance of Post-Workout Hydration

Losing our body salt content to sweat during workouts can cause our muscles to cramp up. Since muscles are controlled by nerves, a poor water and salt balance can weaken muscle strength, causing them to temporarily cease up and leave us feeling achy and stiff. After every workout, it’s important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of electrolyte-rich fluids like iPRO Hydrate
